5 Things You Should Know Before Meeting Your Physiotherapist

Physiotherapy

In order to make the most of your session and help your physiotherapist do the best for you, make sure you keep the following things in mind.

You Should Know Before Meeting Your Physiotherapist

  • It is possible that you may feel a little uncomfortable when you go for a physiotherapy session for the first time.
  • You may feel uncomfortable coming in close proximity with your therapist, or trying out certain poses that you have never done before. Rest assured, your physiotherapist will suggest you the exercises only after understanding your condition and analysing what will work best.
  • When you are relaxed and ready to try what your therapist suggests, it will help you heal faster.
  • Make sure to wear clothes that are comfortable to move around in. If you have yoga or exercise clothes that you use for running, walking or yoga poses, wear those.
  • If your clothes are too tight or do not fit you well, it can make it difficult for you to do certain types of exercises.
  • Wear clothes that you are comfortable in, preferably of cotton material, and that will help you move flexibly.
  • Your physiotherapist will read through all your medical files and see what the problem is, before suggesting the right treatment. However, it is important to provide your therapist with the right information.
  • Tell your therapist what the problem is and what discomfort you have. If you have ever tried a physiotherapy session earlier but did not find it work for you, mention that as well.
  • If you are in excessive distress and feel there are certain things you are not able to follow or do yourself, tell your therapist about it.
  • Ask your therapist about the things you are supposed to do and why certain exercises are suggested.
  • Once you know the exact way a particular exercise can help you, it will help you do it better and with more regularity.
  • When you know what you are doing and how it is supposed to help you, you will be able to understand whether or not the treatment is really helping you. If you feel the exercises are not doing what they are meant to do, you can tell your therapist about it.
  • Make sure you have enough water before the session as well as during and after. Staying hydrated will help your body heal faster after the exercises.
  • If you are not a water person, you can also sip on infused water, tender coconut water, green tea, soup and such.
  • In addition to fluids, you also have to eat a healthy and balanced diet. Proteins, good fats and carbohydrates will help your body heal faster.

Going for a physiotherapy session can be a little daunting the first time. But once you speak to your therapist and understand why you need to do it, it will help you get the best results.
